iPlayer Downloader
The problems with iPlayer Downloader have now been fixed – please feel free to download version 3.4!
With over 43,000 downloads to date, iPlayer Downloader is one of our most popular free applications. It was created because the BBC have always lagged behind in their support of Mac OS X.
iPlayer Downloader is a free Application for Mac OS X which lets you download DRM-free programs from the BBC iPlayer website.
Requirements: Mac OS X 10.5 or later and you must be in the UK otherwise the application won’t be able to download anything.
NEW: Fixes problems introduced at the BBC’s end a few days ago.
INSTRUCTIONS:
It’s very simple to use – just download the Application and drag it to your Applications folder.
Once open just click on a program to download it – you can set download location in the application’s preferences.
The files downloaded from iPlayer Downloader will happily play on the iPhone – just drag the .mov file created by iPlayer Downloader (it defaults to putting these on your desktop) into iTunes and set your iPhone to sync the movie file.
Please bear in mind that iPlayer Downloader is in no way associated with the BBC and that there is a possibility that it may contravene BBC iPlayer’s terms of use. You may use it under your own jurisdiction as long as you are aware that the creators of this Application are in no way responsible for your actions.

Sorry – I just noticed the huge download button!
@snoogly
As stated above at the top of the page – we’re aware of certain issues with iPlayer Downloader at the moment which will be fixed by the 15th of October.
Thanks Lawrence.
We get cranky without our BBC fix!
I know you do, my inbox has been inundated with about 200 emails telling me something’s broken ^_^
Hi limaromeo,
I would like to say that you are awesome!
The iPlayer downloader is genius and thank you. To roll it out free is very generous and I thank you for that. (when i am rich i will donate to you!)
Are you planning to make an ITV version as it is equally difficult to download?
Good luck and once again thanks for such a cool simple but soooo useful app.
Paul
Good luck Lawrence….presume BBC up to their trickery again.
Tom
Lawrence, why don’t you and Paul charge for this service?
I’d happily pay you guys for your time and effort.
Lawrence,
Many thanks for letting us know what is going on.
Tempting to say to all those out there who are frustrated with the current problems (which are of course in no way down to you) that they can have a full refund if not entirely satisfied!
Thinking of your application – I usually send you a small fianancial token of appreciation after every update but have no idea if I am being generous or miserley!
Does anyone out there have a suggestion of a recommended amount to send Lawrence for the initial download/updates received.
I am mindful of how much just one episode of Top Gear would cost from itunes and of course this app makes so much more available to us every month (for which we have already paid our licence fee!).
What do others think is a reasonable amount to send or are we all freeloading on Lawrences generosity and time?
Kind regards to all
Mike
Problems all fixed now, feel free to either update from within the app or click the download button above.
Hurrah! Thanks so much for fixing the Downloader. I’ve really missed it.
This is a truly amazingly useful programme.
I will donate right now. Thanks again, SHaron.
@Lawrence Dudley
Hi Lawrence,
Many thanks for the fix – all hunky dory again!
However…. I can’t change the download directory since upgrading to Snow Leopard. Same with the latest fixed version. I was wondering if this was an issue others had noticed with Snow Leopard or is it just me?
cheers,
Nav
Yep, you’re right – choosing a download folder isn’t working. I hardly use this software myself so hadn’t noticed, I only really maintain it because I know other people benefit from it.
It’ll get fixed at some point when I have some spare time…
If anyone has their download folder pointed somewhere weird and wants to reset it to the desktop delete the com.skyboxstudios.iPlayer_Downloader.plist file from your Library folder in your home folder.
@Lawrence Dudley
Thanks for the quick reply – your tweek to the Library file worked a treat.
Donation just made – thank you for your efforts – much appreciated.
How do I enter proxy information into the preferences? There’s just a text field. I tried the format : but it didn’t help. Seems like that shouldn’t be necessary, though, if I have all of my network activity going through the proxy (System Preferences -> Network).
Format is 123.124.125.126:8080 but it won’t support proxies that require authentication, regardless of what your system settings are…
Hey guys,
Great tool – thanks for the work you have put in.
Quick one… downloaded successfully a few items today (with your new upgrade) but none are compatible with my (recently upgraded) iTunes whereas they were before.
Any hints/tips as to what I can do to make them work? Or is it that they’re now downloading in a different spec?
Once again, thanks indeed for your work – really cool piece of kit.
Hi Lawrence. YOU ARE A STAR!
Thank you so much for updating iPlayer Downloader to solve the recent problems. I had no idea quite how much I used it until I couldn’t!
It is so nice that someone with so much skill is prepared to give the fruits of his labours to those who cannot do it themselves.
Thank you once again and keep up the good work.
When I win the Lottery I will remember you.
anyone having download issues with 10.6.1 and 3.4? also wondering if its possible to download hd content??
thanks for all the hard work, this is one of the best updated and maintained apps out there – time for another donation soon!
cheers
